Marketing Automation for non E-Commerce site

Hello all, What are some good ways I can use marketing automation even though we don't have an e-commerce site. We won't have our users emails so it kinda limits what we can do.The only thing I can think of is:Modal pop ups after @x@ amount of page visits.Some action when user registers for an event.Thanks!
